Inside of our eyes is a natural lens that is clear. When this lens becomes cloudy it is called a cataract.
Aging is the most common cause of cataracts because of natural changes that occur in the lens as we get older. Cataracts may also develop in certain medical problems like diabetes or in the case of eye injuries, prior eye surgery, or having spent a lot of time in the sun without adequate UV protection. Symptoms include blurry vision, glare or sensitivity to light and difficulty with vision at night or feeling like you need more light to read. Cataract surgery is performed when a patient’s cataract develops to the point where it interferes with his/her activities of daily living. This determination is highly personalized and so we take the time to fully evaluate both the cataract as well as your individual needs to assess the most appropriate time to pursue surgery. We offer many options including traditional and femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery, also known as bladeless cataract surgery. Traditional cataract is covered by Medicare and most private medical insurance plans.
Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the US, with nearly 4 million surgeries performed last year. It involves removing the cataract and replacing it with an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens, that restores clear, vibrant, and crisp vision. We are specially trained in the management of complex cataracts and routinely perform surgery on patients with other problems such as diabetes or glaucoma. We offer a variety of intraocular lenses and offer only the best technology for your visual needs. Click here for more information on cataracts and cataract surgery.
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which can cause anxiety, or even fear, in many patients when they are diagnosed. As a fellowship-trained glaucoma specialist we are experienced in the latest technology, laser, and surgical techniques to help you overcome this condition. We utilize the latest technology in diagnosis, visual field testing, optic nerve imaging, and treatment options. While there is no cure for glaucoma, with appropriate treatment and frequent checkups we will travel this journey together and ensure that your treatment plan is personalized and carried out with ease.
As a fellowship-trained cornea specialist we use state-of-the-art technology to help diagnose corneal diseases such as Keratoconus and Fuch’s Endothelial Dystrophy. As ophthalmologists, we also diagnose, treat and manage problems including pterygum, corneal ulcer, and keratitis. These conditions may cause blurry vision, pain, glare, and/or sensitivity to light.
"Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis" (LASIK) is a procedure where ophthalmologist eye surgeons use laser light energy to change the shape or curvature of the cornea. This eliminates or greatly reduces nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In most cases it eliminates the need for glasses and contact lenses. The procedure can be highly personalized to fit your visual needs. Click here for more information on LASIK and Laser Vision Correction.
Diabetes can affect the eye in many ways, most importantly without any symptoms. It can cause cataracts, glaucoma, and retinopathy. Every diabetic patient needs to have an annual eye exam to ensure prompt and appropriate treatment when necessary. While controlling your diabetes is the best way to prevent these conditions, you may still develop diabetic eye disease even when your blood sugar is under control.
The retina is a thin tissue like layer that lines the back wall of the eye and can be affected by a variety of conditions including diabetes, macular degeneration, and retinal detachments. As ophthalmologists we offer comprehensive eye exams to evaluate for such conditions and use state-of-the-art technology to fully evaluate the health of the retina.
Macular degeneration is an irreversible cause of vision loss and is hereditary. Through a comprehensive eye exam and advanced retinal imaging we routinely assess for macular degeneration and can help advise you and your family on how to live with this condition.
